Tanner Street is a dense mixed-use, mixedtenure city quarter in Barking in London's east end, laid out as a street network on an intimate scale made with a hard edge of buildings, rather like most of this area before 1939.

The scheme comprises 165 apartments and houses. At the heart of the scheme is a delightful new public square, where a 10-storey landmark building marks the intersection of a number of public routes.

The scheme is the first major project to be built as a result of a collaborative relationship between Peter Barber Architects and Jestico + Whiles stretching over a 10-year period.

London Borough of Barking & Dagenham was integral to the design from the outset. The speed and efficiency of the process and the quality of the resulting scheme exemplifies close working between local authority, client and design team. The project received planning permission in July 2003, just 13 weeks after the design team was established.
