A number of external spaces have been created; the first is a new civic space defined by Limelight and St Bride’s Church. This space will serve as a piazza during the summer with the café and church breaking out onto this space. A linear landscape provides a strong green edge to Shrewsbury Street, incorporating a children’s play area, alongside gardens and a community orchard. Private amenity space for residents has been provided within a landscaped courtyard located at the very heart of the development.
A design strategy was discussed at the outset of the design process to establish the key issues which would need to be addressed. As the design was progressed, monthly pre-application meetings were held to review massing, materials, highways and policy issues. This enabled the application to be quickly validated and subsequently unanimously approved in September 2014. Committee members praised the scheme for the quality of the community engagement, its high quality design, as well as the very ambition and vision of the project.
