Planning History

The existing Gascoigne East estate comprises an area of 16.36
hectares and accommodates a total of 1,363 residential units. The
estate was developed during the 1960’s and 1970’s and contains a mix
of low, medium and high rise residential blocks. The site is allocated for
redevelopment in the Barking Town Centre Area Action Plan and has
been subject to discussions to facilitate Estate Renewal since 2006.
Officers from various departments at Barking and Dagenham have been
present at meetings throughout the design development. The proposals
have also been presented to the GLA who fully support the scheme.

The Design Process

Close consultation and engagement with key local stakeholders to ensure
that the proposals have evolved incorporating the views and aspirations
of the local community. As such, the following key stakeholders have been
consulted as part of the pre-application engagement process: • London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD); • Gascoigne Ward Councillors; • LBBD Cabinet Members for Housing, Regeneration and Finance ; • Greater London Authority (GLA); • LBBD Residents Urban Design Panel (RUDF); • Local Residents; and • Local Businesses, Schools and Organisations.
The applicant has organised a series of specific consultation events for both
the masterplan and phase 1 proposals. The feedback at all of these events
has been positive and supportive of the proposals.
