An ambitious renewal scheme on a dramatic river frontage site, previously occupied by derelict industrial buildings. The project uses the restoration of an existing fire-damaged mill as the starting point for a built narrative using the same architectural language as the original buildings, which exploits the riverside location to the full.

We selected this project because it raiseskey questions about the way we renew and extend our historic towns. Can the forms and patterns of earlier uses and settlements be successfully adapted to the needs of housing for the next century on a large scale basis without a descent into uncomfortable pastiche? Much will depend on the way the project develops in detail.
