The Design Process

The project was the subject of detailed pre-application discussions with planning officers over three years. Several observations made by planning officers at pre-application stage informed the design as it developed, including:
• The nature and design of the landscaped central courtyard developed in discussion with planning officers
• The design of the eight storey corner building was developed to refer to the architectural language of adjacent buildings.
• The roof top additions were set back from the edge of the roof to lessen their impact
• The quality of accommodation proposed in terms of size of units, natural lighting and access to amenity space was improved in response to planning officer comments. The proposals were presented to a Design Review Panel in October 2015. The panel strongly supported the principles underpinning the development, but recommended further design development in a number of areas. The design was revised in response to the panel's comments, and the amended design was presented to and approved by Islington's design officer in the Spring of 2016. A planning application was submitted in November 2016, and was unanimously approved at committee in April 2017.
