Squire & Partners’ masterplan created a series of interlinked public and private landscaped spaces between the buildings, providing breathing space across the site, promoting biodiversity and encouraging people to enjoy the development. New pedestrian connections were made to link to existing streets and open spaces, and public uses were established including theatre, restaurant, retail and hotel.
A previous scheme had been granted planning permission but the London Borough of Southwark had halted construction part-way through the programme because of their dissatisfaction with the design. Squire and Partners were approached to explore an alternative approach which provided a high level of design quality, but still offered the necessary revenues to make the site viable for development. Planning submission 2010, planning consented 2011, start on site 2011, completion 2017.
