The landscape at Hazelhurst Court provides a memorable and distinctive setting that both reflects and accommodates older residents’needs. A shared surface street prioritises pedestrians and creates a welcoming approach to the buildings, with parking softened by tree planting. Two new central courtyards provide valuable external amenity, which are connected by a new garden room offering a generous, light-filled communal space. All homes are dual aspect to maximise views onto the courtyards and neighbouring streets, with sheltered balconies and recessed entrances adding to the private amenity provision.
Due to the number of homes required, and the suburban nature of the site, extensive discussions were held between the client, design team and LB Lewisham as part of the planning process. Following initial meetings in December 2013, an amended scheme was presented to LB Lewisham’s Design Review Panel in February 2014. Design proposals were subsequently strengthened, and despite some local objections, the planning application was submitted in July 2014 and consent obtained in January 2015.
